THE BOWNESS ON SOLWAY BANNER |
||
|
|
This voluntary project was started early in 2000 for
the village to celebrate the Millennium. The artist, Gilly Walton, gained
a small grant for materials and the wrought iron stand from Northern Arts, Allerdale Borough Council and Solway Rural Initiative. She designed the
layout of the banner so that each person had a square to work on and they
could choose their own technique to work in - embroidery, batik, fabric
painting, applique.
Some people made their squares very quickly, others were very slow, so it wasn't ready for the Millennium celbrations! Then sadly in January 2001 there was the Foot and Mouth epidemic which desolated the whole area - hence the inclusion of the 'No Admittance - Foot and Mouth Disease' image. The banner was finally completed in September 2001 and was unveiled at the Carnival - everyone was delighted with it. You can find the banner displayed in St Michael's Church, Bowness on Solway. |
